Modal Sarees: You Meant "Modal," Not "Model" — Here's What It Is

If you searched "model silk," you meant modal — and it's worth knowing what it actually is, because it's one of the best fabrics you can wear in this climate.

The misspelling is extremely common and completely understandable: the word is unfamiliar, and "model" is a word people know. So let's settle it in one line. Modal is a soft, fluid, breathable fabric made from the cellulose of beech trees — and modal silk sarees are among the most comfortable, best-draping sarees in the mid price range.

Here's what it is, why mills love it, and where it genuinely beats the alternatives.

What modal actually is

Modal is a semi-synthetic cellulosic fibre — a member of the rayon family. It starts as a genuinely natural raw material (beech wood pulp), which is then processed chemically and spun into fibre. So it's neither a pure natural fibre like cotton nor a pure synthetic like polyester; it sits in between, and that in-between quality is exactly the point.

Within the rayon family, modal is the refined version. Ordinary viscose rayon can be made from many woods; modal uses beech specifically, and it's produced by a more refined process that yields a fibre that is stronger, softer, and better behaved when wet than standard viscose.

Why it's so comfortable

Modal's practical advantages are real and measurable, and they matter a great deal in Kerala:

  • It breathes exceptionally well — modal absorbs meaningfully more moisture than cotton, which is why it feels cool and dry rather than clammy in humidity.
  • It's remarkably soft — softer than cotton and softer than standard viscose, with a smooth, almost liquid hand.
  • It drapes beautifully — fluid and body-skimming, closer to silk's fall than cotton's.
  • It has a muted sheen — a soft, understated lustre rather than a synthetic glare.
  • It's low-maintenance — it holds colour well and doesn't demand the care a real silk does.

Put simply: it gives you much of silk's drape and softness at a fraction of the price, and it's more comfortable than silk in heat.

"Modal silk" — is it silk?

No, and it's worth being direct about it. "Modal silk" is a trade name, not a fibre statement — the "silk" describes the look and hand, not the content. There's no silkworm filament in modal.

That places it in the same honest-labelling territory as vichitra silk and art silk. But there's a meaningful difference worth drawing:

  • Art silk / vichitra is typically polyester-based — a true synthetic, warm against the skin, non-breathable.
  • Modal is cellulose-based, made from wood — plant-derived, highly breathable, and far more comfortable to wear.

So if you're choosing between a polyester "art silk" and a modal at similar prices, modal is the better fabric to live in — it's not close. And if you want actual silk, our semi silk vs pure silk guide explains what that costs and why.

Why ajrakh and block printers love modal

You'll notice modal turns up constantly alongside ajrakh and block prints, and that's no accident. Because modal is cellulose — chemically a cousin of cotton — it takes natural and reactive dyes readily and deeply. Ajrakh's indigo and madder sink in beautifully, and the colours come out rich rather than sitting on the surface the way they do on polyester.

Combine that with modal's fluid drape and you get something genuinely appealing: traditional craft printing on a fabric that moves like silk and breathes like cotton. Ajrakh modal is one of the most quietly satisfying things in the shop.

When to choose modal

  • Everyday and office wear — comfortable, breathable, drapes well, easy to wash.
  • Kerala heat and humidity — this is where modal earns its keep over any synthetic.
  • Printed sarees and salwar sets — the dye-taking makes prints richer.
  • Anyone who wants silk's fall without silk's price or fuss.

Where it's less suited: grand, formal occasions calling for real weight and zari. Modal is soft and fluid, not majestic — it's a fabric for living in, not for a wedding-day entrance.

Care

One of modal's real virtues is how little it asks:

  • Gentle cold hand wash with a mild detergent; dry clean anything heavily embroidered.
  • Don't wring — modal is strong when wet compared to ordinary viscose, but twisting still distorts the drape.
  • Dry in shade.
  • Iron on low-to-medium while slightly damp. It creases less than linen and cotton and presses easily.
  • Natural-dye ajrakh modal: wash separately the first few times — the indigo and madder will bleed, and that's normal.

Where to find it

Modal runs through our sarees, salwar sets, kurta materials and dupattas — modal silk sarees around ₹7,000, ajrakh-printed modal salwar sets around ₹4,000, printed modal kurta material around ₹2,500.

And if you came here having typed "model silk" into a search box — you weren't wrong about the fabric, only the spelling. It's modal, it comes from beech trees, and it's a genuinely lovely thing to wear in this weather.
