The Baby Shower Saree: Dressing for Your Seemantham or Valaikappu

Your baby shower is a celebration of you — so the saree should let you be comfortable, festive and completely at ease, bump and all. Comfort isn't a compromise here; it's the whole point.

Whether it's a seemantham, a valaikappu, a godh bharai or a simple baby shower, this is a day of being fussed over, photographed, and often loaded with bangles and flowers. You'll be sitting through rituals and greeting everyone, so the ideal saree is soft, breathable, festive and gentle over the bump. Here's how to feel wonderful on your day.

Comfort comes first

You may be seven, eight, nine months along — so everything about the saree should be kind:

• Soft, light, breathable fabric. Georgette, soft cotton, kasavu or a light soft silk — nothing heavy sitting on the bump, nothing that makes you too warm.
• No stiff, scratchy borders pressing against you. A soft border is far kinder for a long day of sitting.

• Have someone help you drape, and do it close to the event so you're not standing too long.

Festive, and often colourful by tradition

• Bright, auspicious colours suit the day — many families favour yellow, green, red, orange or other festive shades for a seemantham or valaikappu. Follow your family's custom if there is one.
• A little sparkle is lovely — this is a celebration and you're the guest of honour, so a festive saree with a pretty border or light shimmer feels right.

• Coordinate with the decor if you like — many mums-to-be pick a shade that pops against the flowers for the photos.

The bangles, flowers and styling

At a valaikappu especially, the bangles are the centrepiece — armfuls of glass bangles are placed on you, so plan around them:

• Keep sleeves comfortable and your arms easy to reach — the bangle ceremony is hands-and-arms-forward. (See the blouse guide.)
• Let the bangles and flowers be the jewellery. With armfuls of bangles and jasmine in your hair, keep the rest minimal — a light necklace and earrings are plenty.
• Comfortable, flat footwear and nothing you have to manage — this is a day to be looked after, not to fuss over your outfit.
• A blouse with a little room is kinder than something fitted to the day — you'll be more comfortable, and it's easy to have made with ease built in.
